This year I was delighted to be able to attend the cwu annual conference in Bournemouth on Tuesday 22 may. Walking into the conference hall for the first time and seeing all the other CWU activists was daunting at first.  I was able to vote of a number of propositions which where carried and shall be worked towards during this y ear and next by the T&FS Executive

During the afternoon session I was able to address conference on recruitment and most importantly to deliver a speech to second a motion on the actions of some of the managers on the Cable & Wireless contract in both Glasgow and Birmingham.

This motion was a direct result of the change in the non contractual bonus scheme and how the managers across both sites where giving misrepresentation of the CWU involvement.

The motion put forward was “ Conference is concerned at the common practice of local managers in manpower business services at the sites in both Birmingham and Glasgow in representing new procedures as having been discussed and or agreed with the cwu.  These procedures are usually detrimental to our members and our apparent collusion is therefore very serious”

The officer is instructed to make sure that manpower business services nationally are aware of the actions of their managers locally and ensure appropriate action is taken to cease this.  A copy of my speech is included at the bottom of this report.

I was also very lucky to have been invited to attend a buffet dinner with other non BT members, there I was able to speak to other manpower employees and compare terms and conditions and pay rates etc.

I enjoyed the whole experience of conference and meeting new people and I look forward to returning in due course
