CONTAMINATED TELECOMS EQUIPMENT
Whilst working in the external environment you may encounter telecoms equipment with bird droppings on them. Do not try and remove the droppings whilst they are dry, this could turn the droppings into dust which could be inhaled.
Before attempting to remove any droppings you
must carry out a risk assessment.
To remove small amounts of droppings (lesser contamination), use the procedure
set out below.
To remove large amounts of droppings (a major contamination) follow the
procedure set down in
SFY/HSH/C022
.
Removal of bird droppings from lesser contaminated Telecoms equipment
Wear adequate personal protective equipment i.e. vinyl gloves (e-ASC item code 026796-7-8), overalls, respirator 3A (corporate clothing item code: 127091) before attempting to remove the droppings.
Spray the droppings with “Contamination Spray” (e-ASC item code 025419) making them moist. Use the spray in accordance with manufacturers instructions.
Wipe off the droppings using Paper Towelling 1
(e-ASC item code 211442) or similar.
Contaminated towelling and vinyl gloves should be placed in two disposable
plastic bags (double bagged) and disposed of as general waste (category 1
waste).
Personal hygiene is very important.
Any droppings that come into contact with the skin or eyes should be washed off
immediately.
Wash your hands (and your
face where necessary) before you eat or smoke after removing bird droppings from
telecoms equipment. You should pay special attention to under your fingernails.
