Dear Colleagues
TUC/CWU Hazards at Work Safety Reps Handbook
Further to LTB No.
352/05 issued on 25 July 2005 this is to inform
Branches that the TUC have now published the new
"Hazards at Work" book and the CWU Health, Safety &
Environment Department has taken delivery of our
'one off' order from the TUC Printers.
The new 2006 "Hazards at Work" single
volume Book replaces the old format Hazards at
Work ring binder and its annual updates which are no
longer available were phased out with the
final updates being produced in March 2004. The new
book will be fully updated every two/three years.
The new "Hazards at Work"
version consist of nearly 400 pages in A4 format and
it has been completely revamped to make it even more
comprehensive, practical and user-friendly than its
predecessor.
The TUC Union Health and
Safety Specialists (UHSS) Committee has examined
draft versions of the new publication and the
previews have been extremely complementary.
The new book is cheaper to
produce and retail than the old "ring-binder" format
and although the purchase of single copies direct
from the TUC will be around £20 inc p&p, the CWU HQ
Health, Safety & Environment Department has made a
one off bulk purchase at a discount price and in
order to promote Health and Safety and to provide
Branches with an important Health and Safety
resource and reference book. The Health, Safety &
Environment Department are providing each Branch
with one copy free of charge.
The Hazards at Work manual was
adopted as the Official CWU Safety Reps Handbook
some years ago and has become a very popular and
successful publication amongst Safety
Representatives. The CWU Health, Safety &
Environment Department and NEC sub-committee are
happy to continue its endorsement of the new,
improved and updated version.
Apart from production costs, the TUC's main
reason for the change away from the old
"ring-binder" version with its annual updates was
that less and less updates were being purchased
annually, leading the TUC to become concerned that
as time passed more and more 'out of date' manuals
were being held and used by Safety Reps and Trade
Union Branches etc.
"Hazards at Work" will continue to be provided as a
resource for Safety Reps on CWU/TUC approved Safety
Reps training courses and the CWU Education and
Training Centre will be using the new books as soon
as possible.
Branches wishing to purchase
additional copies should do so directly from the TUC
The chapters of the new
"Hazards at Work" Safety Reps Handbook are:
* First aid
* Rehabilitation
* Compensation
Yours sincerely
